Notes

Fantasy Chillout is music to soak in rather than follow. Each of its ten tracks, around ten minutes long, sets the listener down in a different corner of a fantasy realm at evening or at rest: a green hill country with smoke rising from the chimneys, a hidden valley of falling water, a castle library after lights-out, halls carved deep under a mountain, a drowned city of towers, the top room of a stargazer's tower, a lamp burning alone in a snowy wood.

The titles hint at each place and leave the rest to the listener. Each world has its own instruments and its own mode, so the hill country has clarinet, recorder and harp over a held G, while the snowbound wood is hushed and still.

The writing deliberately avoids anything that would catch the ear and bring the listener back to the room. There are no catchy tunes, no sharp attacks and no felt beat. The harmony moves at the pace of slow breathing, and melodies drift over the held sound and dissolve. Each track is shaped like a tide, coming in, settling, drifting, and fading to nothing.

The album plays as one long session. Each track ends on a sound that leads into the next, and the last track closes on the chord that opens the first, so the album played on repeat comes back to where it began.
